In many common law systems such as that of Britain, a "felony" is a very serious crimeas opposed to a misdemeanor. Such serious crimes include aggravated assault, arson, burglary, murder, and rape.
Historically, felonies were those crimes for which the punishment was either execution or forfeiture of property (escheat) but punishment for felonies can now range in severity from probation, through imprisonment, to execution.
Those convicted of a felony are known as "felons".

The laws against witchcraft introduced by Elizabeth I (1563) and James I (1604) removed the crime from the ecclesiastical courts and made it a felony under the common law and subject to escheat upon conviction. Thus provided local officials with a financial reward for discovering witches and securing convictions which did nothing to temper any inclination they had to do so previously and could have played no small part in the mushrooming of cases brought before the courts.
