Clerk of the Council (Lord Privy Seal, 1444-1450), Adam Moleyns was rewarded for his services to the Crown with the bishoprick of Chichester (1445). He also obtained royal licence to impark 12,000 acres and fortify twelve manor houses.
A key member of the Privy Council for many years, Moleyns was lynched by unpaid sailors in Portsmouth in January 9th, 1450.
Henry VI sent Moleyns to the Royal Garisson Church at Portsmouth to pay the soldiers and sailors of the Garrison. The Bishop was murdered because of a disagreement in the amount of pay for which crime the town was excommunicated and remained under interdict for fifty years.
King Henry VI paid Adam Moleyns £1,000 to cancel a patent which authorized him to ship wool anywhere that he pleased.
