The Romans made and used thin tile bricks in Britain during their occupation of the province. After their depature in the fifth century, no bricks were used in Britain again until the fouteenth century when they were imported from Flanders.
The word 'brick' is of French or Walloon origin.
Brick came to be widely used in the parts of the eastern counties of England during the fifteenth century where the supply of timber was running short and there was little or no stone available excepting clunch. These bricks were manufactured fo the local clays.
During the great period of canal building in the eighteenth century, bricks were locally made wherever possible with kilns being built and later moved, demolished or abandoned as the canal progressed. Because the brick tax was payable on the number of bricks produced, these were made slightly larger than normal to minimise the tax payable.

| | | | The viaduct, now owned by Winchester City Council, carried the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Junction Railway line to its junction with the GWR. Spanning 614 metres (2,014 feet), it is the largest brick structure in the country and the first of its kind to possess a concrete core - despite these important facts, English Heritage refuse to grant this important part of Britain's heritage Listed status and it may be under threat from lack of funding. |
