The red fox is the only wild relative of the dog in the British Isles and their largest land carnivore since the extermination of the wolf by man.
The red fox is a slender animal about 60 cm (2 ft) long and standing about 36 cm (14 inches) high at the shoulder. Its bushy tail, known as a "brush", is about 40 cm (16 inches) long and tipped with white.
The coat is redish-brown above and white or grey below. There are black patches on the front of the legs and behind the ears.

Rabbits, introduced by the Normans, are one of the foxes' prey species. Foxes often make their earths in old rabbit burrows.
For most of the year, foxes prey on small mammals and birds but blackberries make up an important part of the foxes' diet in the autumn.
Foxes can most often be seen early in the morning and at dusk.
If you want to observe foxes you must be careful to be very still and down-wind of them as these shy predators have acute senses of sight and hearing.
Adults and young may be seen returning to or palying near the earth early in the morning.
