Rabbits

Rabbits were introduced into the British Isles by the Normans as a source of fresh meat in the winter months and they have been encouraged since the middle ages by the building of artificial warrens known as "pillow-mounds". Since their numbers were decimated by myxomatosis in the 1950s, rabbit numbers have increased steadily but these rodents are shyer as well as more resistant to myxomatosis than their forebears. Their presence is often noticed by the noise as they scurry away, close-cropped turf and their droppings.

Observing Small Mammals

Many of Britain's small mammals are nocturnal and are best seen by waiting silently at night for their rustling (or, in the case of hedgehogs, their snuffling) as they search for their food. It is easiest to see them by using a torch equiped with a red filter.

Foxes are most usually seen early in the morning and at dusk.
