The 1833 Act prohibited the employment of children aged under nine in factories.

It restricted the number of daily working hours to ten for women and "young persons" under eighteen years of age.

The Act provided that children under the age of thirteen should not work for more than eight hours a day and had to attend school for two hours a day.

Although the Act initally raised the costs of production by widely substituting adult adult for child labour, in the long run it proved advantageous to the employers because of the better quality of the work produced.
