In 1663, Charles II made a progress to the West Country (through which he had escaped to Europe in 1651) with his wife, Catherine of Braganza, and the Duke of York, his brother.
At Marlborough in Wiltshire, the royal party were entertained by Lord Seymour. On hearing that John Aubrey considered the stone cirlce of Avebury to excel those of Stonehenge with which the monarch was familiar, the Wiltshire historian was summoned to attend the royal party at the house. Aubrey accompanied the Royals as far as Avebury where the king showed considerable interest in the ancient monument.
Queen Catherine continued on towards Bath where the King and his brother were meant to catch up with her but, on seeing Silbury Hill, Charles insisted on leaving the royal coach and climbing to the top of the enigmatic mound.
