What later became known as the Frankpledge system, a means of ensuring that each freeman of the medieval hundred had a personal interest in maintaining the law, administered by the hundred court; every freeman had to be a member of a tithing, a group of ten men under a tithingman, each member of which could be made responsible for the misdeeds of any of the others.   8-548-EB

Administration

The visus franciplegii or view of frankpledge to ensure that the law was the responsibilty of the sheriffs who held itinerant sheriffs' tourns twice a year.

The view of frankpledge was introduced during the reign of King Henry I (1100-35) or earlier and was regulated by the Assize of Clarendon of 1166 and by the Magna Carta as reissued in 1217.

In 1217 it was ordered that the view of frankpledge should be conducted only once a year, at Michealmas.
