Affpuddle Heath is part of the Great Heath, Hardy's 'Egdon Heath', which stretched across south-east Dorset, and whose different parts are variously named. This stretch takes its name from the adjacent village of Affpuddle.
There a numerous burial mounds here and the heath also carries unusual depressions known as 'Culpepper's Dish' and 'Culpepper's Spoon' - the biggest of a number of circular pits. They were once thought thought to have been man-made, the parts of ancient dwelling but we now know that they are natural features, sometimes reaching 20 metres (60 feet) in depth, caused by the presence of sandpipes in the chalk.
