The Parliament Act of 1911 limited the duration of
parliament
to five years if it had not been dissolved earlier. The term of each
parliament
is reckoned to start from the date given on the writs for the new
parliament.
During World War I (1914-18), the life of the parliament was extended by successive acts
to eight years and the
parliament
which first sat on January 31st, 1911, dissolved on November 25th, 1918 (fourteen days
after the Armistice), a General Election having been held before the term finally
prescribed. A similar course of events took place during World War II with the
parliament which first sat on November 6th, 1935, not being dissolved until
June 15th, 1945.
The longest recorded sitting of the
House of Commons
was 41 hours and 30 minutes. The sitting started at 1600h on January 31st, 1881,
and finished at 0930h on February 2nd. The longest recorded for the
House of Lords
is 19 hours commencing at 1430h on February 29th, 1968, and ending at 0930h on March
1st.
