The 'commons' were summoned to all the parliaments of
Edward III and,
by the end of his reign, a separate House of Commons began to appear. The first
known Speaker was elected in 1377.
Each house of
parliament
has the right to regulate its own internal proceedings and commit for contempt.
The
longest recorded sitting of the House of Commons
was 41 hours and 30 minutes. The sitting started at 1600h on January 31st, 1881,
and finished at 0930h on February 2nd.
