The 1,014-km (630-mile) long South West Coast Path, completed in 1978 is Britain's longest National Trail. It runs along the coast from Minehead in Somerset to Poole in Dorset.
As the path follows the clifftops and rises and falls with every river mouth, it is one of the more challenging.
However far you plan to walk sturdy footwear and a basic first aid kit are advisable. Allow plenty of time, for coastal walking usually takes longer than you anticipate. Check local public transport times before setting out.
The path includes the 95 mile (155km) long Dorset and East Devon Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site,
the Dorset Heritage Coast, the East Devon Heritage Coast, the South Devon Heritage Coast,
the Rame Head Heritage Coast, the Gribbin Head - Polperro Heritage Coast,
the Roseland Heritage Coast, the Lizard Heritage Coast,
the Penwith Heritage Coast, the Godreavy - Portreath Heritage Coast,
the Trevose Head Heritage Coast, the Pentire Point - Widemouth Heritage Coast,
the Hartland Heritage Coast, the North Devon Heritage Coast,
the Exmoor Heritage Coast and Exmoor National Park.
