Launceston Priory, near the parish church of St Thomas below and to the north of Launceston near the River Kensey was founded in 1126 by William-de-Warelwest, the Bishop of Exeter, and became, for a time, the wealthiest religious house in Cornwall.
A monastery was built at St Stephens-by-Lanson between 910-20 AD and became known as "the priory atop the hills " and was replaced between 1126-30 when the new priory was founded at St Thomas by Bishop William-de-Warelwest.
After its consecration, it was dedicated to St Stephen and the monks from Aldgate Priory, London, who became its inmates, professed to the rule of St Augustine (Black Friars or Canons, after their habit). By the 14th century, the priory the priory had become an impresive monastic building, by the 16th century, it had reached the zenith of its influence and wealth. Following King Henry III's dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530's, it was razed to the ground to be discovered during the construction of the railways in the 19th century.
Sufficient of the foundations remain to show the size and layout of the monastic buildings. Despite the absence of the monastic building, many features such the carp pond (an important source of fresh fish in medieval times) and site of the Lazar colony remain in the surroundings.
