About 8,000 years ago, the sea levels which had been steadily rising for several millenia first cut off Ireland from the European mainland and, as the North Sea and the English Channel filled, the whole of the British Isles.

The water had risen some 100 metres to flood the low lying features of a varied landscape produced by the rich geology of the British Isles to produce a staggering 10,000 miles of coastline, much of it irregular, and some 6,000 individual islands.
