A nuisance weed species in its native South African (all nine Lagarosiphon species are native to Africa) L. major was first recorded in Britain in 1944, growing in a chalk pit.
It has since spread to many locations in the UK and, because of its prodigious capacity for photosynthesis in alkaline water, has displaced both the foreign Elodea canadensis (Canadian Pondweed) and Elodea nuttallii (Nutall's Pondweed).
Frequently sold by garden centres and aquarists as an oxygenating plant, it is often mislabelled as Elodea crispa which does not exist as a species.

All the plants in the UK are female thus, pollination being impossible, it reproduces vegetatively and even small pieces of this large plant can root and grow.
L. major grows in water up to three metres deep which is still or slow-flowing, it will not grow in fast-flowing water. It has been found in canals, drainage ditches and slow-flowing rivers. In southern England the plants will over-winter while in the north the the plant mass collapses but never dies completely.
The only means of removing the species are by machanical or chemical means. Grass carp will eat it if they have no other choice, but it is not one of their preferred foods.
