Crassula helmsii, an invasive exotic introduction into the British Isles from Australia, causes major environmental problems in freshwater aquatic habitats and is extremely difficult to control.
First recorded as naturalised in Britain at Greensted Pond in Essex in the mid-1950s, it has spread rapidly throughout the UK.
It forms dense vegetation mats that out-compete all the native species, choking ponds and drainage ditches. It readily reproduces vegetatively and does not die back during winter.
