Falco subbuteo Linnaeus
fam. Falconidae
order Falconiformes
class Aves (birds)
This summer visitor to England, popularly known as the "Hobby", is a long-winged falcon which, although it has the superficial appearance of a Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) when it is at rest, it has the grace and speed of a Peregrine (Falco peregrinus) in flight.
European birds leave their breeding range completely to winter in Africa to the south of the Sahara. Occassionally, single birds may wander away from the breeding range.
They arrive in Britain from Africa in May and depart in August and September and are confined to southern England and the adjacent portions of the Midlands. There are also records of the Hobby in the Spey Valley in Scotland.
Throughout this range it has been persecuted by the illegal collection of eggs.
The British population numbers some 75 to 250 pairs and there are signs of a gradual increase, particularly in the south-west of England.
Hobbies are found on dry heathland and downland where clumps of trees are present.
The Hobby catches it prey, which includes insects, and small birds such as Martins, Swallows, and Swifts in flight.
Hobbies arrive from Africa in May and lay their single clutch of two or three eggs in mid-June. Usually the old nest of another species of bird is used, usually high in a tree which is often a conifer.
The eggs, with spots of reddish-brown, are incubated for 28 days from the laying of the second egg, mostly by the female. The male brings food to his brooding mate and, when the chicks have hatched, for her to feed the young. As the chicks grow, both parents hunt for food. The young begin to fly after 28 to 32 days.
Throughout its British range the hobby has been persecuted by the illegal collection of eggs.
