The reluctant Augustine was called upon by Pope Gregory I to lead a mission in Britain. Augustine travelled from Rome and reached Kent in AD 597. Here he was well recieved by Aethelbert, king of Kent, who allowed him to preach and became one of the first converts to Christianity.
Augustine was made Archbishop of Canterbury and Christ Church, Canterbury, was consecrated in 597.
Augustine started to preach throughout southern England with many conversions and a number of churches being built. He was unableto overcome the opposition from the Celtic churches of the west.
Augustine died probably between 612 and 614.
