Old Bridge, Wool, Dorsetshire
A bridge spanned the river Frome here in 1343 but the present structure probably dates from the Elizabethan era. The bridge consists of five nearly semi-circular stone arches each with three ribs. The largest arch spans a little over fifteen feet. Each of the four piers has a cutwater upstream and a smaller one downstream - all rise to the top of the low parapet wall to form pedestrain refuges. A brick flood arch was added to the southern end of the bridge in the nineteenth century at a slighty different alignment. Old Bridge features in Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbevilles where he describes how Tess and Angel Clare cross the bridge to reach Wellbridge Manor (Woolbridge Manor) for their honeymoon. Local legend has it that the bridge is haunted by a coach complete with coachman and passengers - but only one of Turbeville blood can see it.
