Bournemouth & West Hampshire Water supply drinking water to about 450,000 people (2002) in parts of
Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. Because
of the importance of tourism to the area, this number increases significantly during the influx of visitors
during the summer months.
Three quarters of the water supply utilised by the company is derived from the river Avon and the remainder from
boreholes at Stanbridge, Hale and Lymington.

About 100,000 additional operational samples were also taken throughout the year.

COMPLIANCE TESTING
In 2001, 16,389 compliance tests were carried out against the standards laid down in the Water Supply
(Water Quality) Regulations 2000. Of these, 99.8% complied with the Regulations and in the 3.2 or so
thausand cases where the tests contravened the standards there was no threat to health.
In 2001, the Company was accredited to the international environmental management system ISO 14001.
Baroness Young, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, visited George Jessel House, the company's head
offices, on March 21st and later went on to visit Longham Lakes. To mark the occassion, slices of a
celebratory cake were distributed to the staff.

The Bournemouth & West Hampshire Water Plc started trading on July 1st, 1994, having been formed by the merger of
two former companies supplying water in the local area, Bournemouth Water (established in 1863) and
West Hampshire Water (established in 1893),
which had merged into a new Company through Schemes of Arrangement
under the Water Industry Act 1991.
