A unit of land measure, equivalent to 4,840 square yards (a square with 70 yard long sides). A square mile contains 640 acres.

The acre was fixed by Edward I in 1305 as an area 4 rods wide by 40 rods long - that which could be ploughed in a day by a man and two oxen.
