English statesman and Lord Chancellor (1587-91) during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I whose favourite he became.

Hatton spoke for the Queen in parliament, frequently attacking Mary Queen of Scots in his speeches and was a member of the commission which tried her. His attractive personality and social charm won Hatton many royal favours at court. He both practised and patronised literature.

It was Sir Francis Hatton who patronised and promoted Sir Francis Drake's great circumnavigation of the world (1577-80) and drake renamed his flagship on the expedition the 'Golden Hind ' in Hatton's honour - his arms were "a hind statant Or".

He was granted Brownsea Castle & Island in Dorset's Poole Harbour by the Queen in 1576. Piracy was rife during this period in history and the captains of Brownsea Castle are reputed to have provided protection for some of the leading English pirates - in return for a share of their gains.

Elizabeth also sold Hatton nearby Corfe castle on the Isle of Purbeck which he strengthened against possible invasion by the Spanish Armada.
