In the days of horse-drawn transport and when livestock were driven along the roads, the scrapings of the parish roads must have been a valuable resource as fertilizer. A Vestry minute of February 18th, 1819, records;
At a Vestry holden on this day, it was agreed that the scrapings of the Parish roads by order of the Waywardens, or by individuals occupying the opposite grounds, such individuals shall, as heretofore, have the first offer of such scrapings, if they do not choose to have it, then the waywardens to dispose of it for the benefit of the Parish.
