A chantry is a chapel, usually within a church, built for priests to sing masses for the soul of the founder who is usually buried within the chantry alone or with close family.

Sometimes referred to as a 'chantry chapel'.

The word Chantry is first encountered in the 14th century. Ite derives from the Old French Chanterie - the French Chanter, means to sing (the mass).
