The Mediterannean annual is found in one location in Cornwall and on the Scilly Isles. It also occurs very rarely on Smallmouth at the eastern end of Dorset's unique Chesil Beach.
The plant is 30 to 60cm (1-2 feet) high with slender roots and leaves in whorls of four or opposite. They are composed of a ovate to rounded plabe with a very small stipule.
The greenish or whitish-green flowers occur in terminal branched racemes on stem or branches. The five petals are shorter than the five sepals and the flowers has 3-5 stamens. Each flower has a bract at the base of its peduncle.
The numerous curved fruit are brownish-red or reddish, almost 3-sided and finely papillose.
