The first recorded Mayor of Christchurch was John Bevyll who held the office in the
15th century.
Prior to this, reeves appointed by the
Lord of the Manor performed similar functions to those which later became the responsibility of
the mayor. The Lord of the Manor still
had a say in the appointment of the town's mayor for a further four centuries until
Christchurch was incorporated as a borough by Royal Charter in
1882.
The charter empowered the town council, for the first time, to elect its own mayor. In
1886
the town was made a municipal borough under the
Municipal Corporations Act.
The local government reorganisation of
1974 removed Christchurch from the county of Hampshire and attached it to
Dorset.
