The primary objective of establishing the swuklink.com Time-Line is to provide a time-line database capable of displaying time-line information at mutiple levels of detail and capable of displaying the information based on a variety of context-sensitive criteria both for use within the swuklink.com website and by third parties.
Each entry in the database is 'ranked ', currently on a scale of 0-7, to enable the user to select information from a world-wide perspective, to a very local level by physical location or context. This is probably best demonstrated by example and, for this purpose, the pharmaceutical and pottery businesses established in Plymouth, Devon, by William Cookworthy (1705-1780) is used here as an illustration;
We will be providing means for third parties (other websites) to include most of the Time-Line features available on the swuklink.com following a simple registration. Web sites availing themselves of this facility must have php capability.
Registration will be a simple procedure involving the completion of an on-line form giving details of site name, owner, url and email for contact if necessary. On satisfactory submission of the form a password will be issued which will enable the user to use the Time-Line in the user's own pages.
This facility should be available early in December 2003.
1. First, and foremost, the size of the time-line database established in August has far outgrown the capabilities of the original display engine which shows hundreds of entries to a page in higher resolutions. Remedying this inloves a major re-write of the engine which should be completed towards the end of November, 2003.
2. The same is true of some local pages where the time-line is included as part of another page - this will also be remedied by the end of November 2003.
3. The database does not extend before 1AD - again, this will be fixed by the end of November 2003.
4. Third party use (use of the time-line within the pages of other sites) is a facility we hope to have on line early in December 2003.
