John Smeaton (172492), English civil engineer.
Smeaton became an instrument maker, improved instruments of navigation, and carried out many experiments on various mechanical apparatus.
His interests turned increasingly to engineering in the early 1750s, as evidenced by a number of papers read before the Royal Society on the subject during this period. Within ten years, he had become recgnised as the first professional engineer of his time.
He built the third lighthouse on the Eddystone Rock of the coast of Devon between 1756 and 1789. He also worked on the Forth and Clyde Canal, Ramsgate Harbour and many important bridges.
