The four stone-built almhouses houses in Cricklade Street overlooking the churchyard were built by the bequest of Alexander Anderson (1865) of 1,636 for the benefit of the poor and 32 given by the local board.

Each of the houses consisted of a living room and pantry on the ground floor with a bedroom above. Built in to the western elevation of the almshouses is a commemorative stone bearing the date 1877.

Single or married men or women aged over sixty and resident in Swindon over three years and not in receipt of poor relief were entitled to apply and preference was given to those reduced by misfortune from better circumstances.

The inmates of houses no. 1 and no. 2 received small weekly pensions and John Chandler declared a trust in 1897 and gave 100 to provide a pension for the inmate of house no. 3. Each newly-elected almsperson was placed in house no. 4 which had no pension attached and thus there was not a great demand for admission to the almshouses.

By 1906, Anderson's institution had become known as a "Hostel" and, in that year, Swindon's charities were united under a Scheme of the Charity Commissioners. While the Bowley, Evans, Grey charities and Sheppard's Dole were to continue to be applied to their original purposes, the purpose of the sheme was to amalgamte the other charities into the "Almshouse and Nursing Charities" so that the income could be used to maintain the almshouses with any residue distributed to the poor by other means.

In 1903 all four inmates were women.

In 1962 the charities had an annual income of 110 and only residents in the ancient parish of Swindon were eligible to benefit.
